Hoto-ji (Gokuraku-ji) Temple
In Murasaki's day, Gokuraku-ji was a funerary temple for the senior Fujiwara nobility. In the Wistera Leaves chapter of The Tale of Genji, To no Chujo, Yugiri and Genji travel to Gokuraku-ji for the anniversary of Princess Omiya's death. |

Situated about 15 minutes' walk south of Fushimi-inari Shrine, the original Gokuraku-ji site is now occupied by Hoto-ji Temple, which is currently undergoing major renovations. |
