Hokai-ji Temple

Situated just north of Uji, Hokai-ji is one of a handful of extant Amida halls built by Heian aristocrats in the mid-11th century when the degeneration of Buddhist Law (mappo) was believed to begin.

The main hall contains a magnificent statue of Amida, comparable to the more well known image at Byodo-in.
