Located immediately south of Nijo Castle, Shinsen'en is all that's left of the pre-1331 Kyoto Imperial Palace grounds. In The Great Mirror, the narrator recounts how he once watched Retired Emperor En'yu's procession from the northwest corner of Shinsen'en garden.
