Rokujo Avenue, Kyoto

Rokujo Avenue is mentioned frequently in the Tale of Genji. It is the home of Lady Rokujo and later of Genji and all his ladies. The rather desolate Enjuji Temple stands at the corner of Rokujo Avenue and Kawaramachi. The temple has its origins in a Buddha hall built by Emperor Go-Shirakawa when he took vows in 1169. Also known as Kanabutsudera (Golden Buddha Temple), it had housed a golden Buddha that was lost when the temple burned down at the end of the Edo Period.
